M.S.I. Formed in 1997 in Hobart, Tasmania, a small southern
state of Australia. The band consisted of members of other Tassie
metal acts such as Baalphegor, Krucifor and Azimuth. They had
initially intended to be a slow, doomy affair without any fast
blasting beats or grindy guitars but as the songwriting process
continues, a more extreme approach was sought.
The group played a shite-load of gigs with this line-up, supporting
a few notable bands such as Dreadnaught and Atomizer as well
as with a heap of local bands from the (at the time) thriving
metal scene., also releasing a number of demo's, "Testimony
of the Miserable" and "The Vault of Horror",
both of which got many favourbale reviews, so it was time to
record a blinding full-length."Rhythmic Slamish" was
recorded at Rattle and Hum studios in Hobart, Tas in May, 2000.
It was engineered by Mike Shelley, who gave the band a very
heavy but also very polished sounding record. The band launched
the CD at the ICQ bar in Hobart, supported by local Hobart act
Psycroptic and playing a killer set themselves of old and new
songs, which the strong crowd embraced. It seemed like things
were happening.
Unfortunately, in mid/late 2000. the original rhythem section
(Brady and Russel) left the group due to musical and personal
differences! To which the band thought......."Fuck"
Soon after, the band recruited Mathew Chalk, formerly of Hemlok,
Cheesegrater of Chastity and also of Psycroptic to jump on the
drum stool and Nick Warren, formerly of Cheesegrater of Chastity
to take on bass duties.
The new line-up took off a few months to rehearse and performed
their first return show in January, 2001. The audience were
blown away with crushingly heavy sound and also with the new
technical aspect of the songs. It was a winning formula. This
year, besides playing some of the most insanely brutal music
live in venues in Tasmania, including gigs with the likes of
Omnium Gatherum, Intense Hammer Rage and doing shows around
Melbourne with the likes of The Bezerker, Abrasion, Fuck......I'm
Dead, The Wolves and Contrive. M.S.I. have been on a song writing
binge, recording a 5-song e.p to promo the new material which
they printed printed a mere 100 copies of and gave them at gigs.
M.S.I.'s doom-riddled caveman death/slam is continually evolving.
Their soon-to-be-released album "Dream The Serenade"
is about to be unleased upon the ears of the world, and will
be available in conjunction with a live DVD. Seeing as the album
has been in the pipeline for quite some time there has been
a number of developments as well as another line-up change.
Nearly 2 years ago Nick Warren left the band to move interstate.
He is still awesome mates with the band, and currently plays
in Melb deathsters Excarnated, as well as a few little side-projects.
He was replaced by local slam king Jason Peppiatt (Born Headless,
Psycroptic) who has revelled in his role as part of the M.S.I.
brotherhood. He learned the songs quick as, and had now played
many shows with his newly found family. Peppiatt's side project
Goreverk has also gotten serious, with the addition of Chalk
to bass/vox duties, for an impending release. You may also
have noticed Psycroptic mentioned after Peppo's name, and
that's due to them separating with Chalky as vocalist. This
was due to many reasons, but the result has been a tighter
and more driven M.S.I.! Peppo, Tim and Rick are also in the
midst of a side-project of their own, entitled Gape, and it
is simply an ode to slam. Chalk has also been dabbling on
many things, but they seem to be a secret, the CUNT!!!.
The band has played many many shows with this line-up, including
a trip to mainland Australia, where they played Geelong, Melbourne
and Sydney. They won over (and sickened) many new fans , whilst
playing alongside the following: Desolator, Befallen, Garbage
Guts, Rotten Chop, Celestial and Bludgeoner. The M.S.I. boys
are still pushing the porn-gore side of things, their latest
sets featuring many new tracks including: " Grandma's
Strap-on", "Decaying Member" and their top
40 hit, "fucking the dead guy". They also got some
new shirts done for these and local shows, so check out the
merch section for all the rank little goodies!!!
M.S.I. currently has its most solid (and hopefully final)
line-up. It is apparent in their songs and live performances,
and they are keen to raise their output in both the release
and gig/touring areas. With the addition of Peppo's song writing
skills adding riffs to the latest songs (generally Chalky
and Tim write the tunes), it has given M.S.I a new dimension.
So be prepared- 8 ½ songs in the bag…it'll be
time for a new release soon people…SO GET FUCKING READY!!!!!!!
